About Guyana Basketball

The Guyana Basketball Federation (GBF) was founded in 1961. Its primary objective is to promote, supervise and govern the playing of basketball in Guyana as stipulated by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA). In addition, to its local obligations, the GBF has the responsibility of preparing and selecting the male and female national teams, that compete in FIBA sponsored international basketball competitions including the FIBA Basketball World Cup, the Olympic Basketball Tournament, and 3×3 basketball, as well as for some national competitions, and for the development of youth basketball initiatives that address player development, coach education and licensing and safety.

The GBF Operations & Development division is tasked with the development of youth basketball initiatives that address player development, coach education, and safety while promoting, growing, and elevating the game. Current GABF youth initiatives include coach licensing and education; coach academies; regional camps; youth clinics; open court programs; Women in the Game conferences; and the Road to Mecca National Club Championships.

The GBF is an official member of the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) and the International Basketball Federation (FIBA). The GBF is assigned to the Americas zone of FIBA and in turn, is assigned to the Americas Sub-Zone of Central America and Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CONCENCABA) and to the Sub-Sub-Zone of the Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC).

OUR MISSION
To develop and lead an inclusive basketball community of qualified, credible, and dedicated administrators, coaches, and officials working to support players, parents, and programs that help grow and promote the game while inspiring young people to reach their potential both on and off the court.

OUR VISION
To be a unifying sport that is accessible to everyone.

OUR MANDATE
The GBF’s mandate as stipulated by FIBA is to organize programmes and activities aimed at developing the sport of basketball in Guyana. We organize clinics and workshops to develop coaches and officials. We promote and encourage the development of the youth, both male and female, and organize and oversee competitions that include the National Championships, School’s Basketball Championships, and 3X3 basketball for both males and females.
Basketball is the most popular indoor sport and the second biggest team sport in the world, played and watched by millions of people and popular with both men and women, particularly among those aged 14-34. It is one of the fastest and most athletic of all sports, it is compelling, vibrant, and modern, it promotes fair play, team spirit, and healthy lifestyles.
Basketball has an extraordinary reach. Not just in its ability to connect with consumers in all the world’s key markets, but in the way, it cuts through social boundaries to touch all sections of modern society. Basketball acts as an agent of social change, for community development, and for transforming lives.
