The Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) on Friday met with Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Charles Ramson Jr, his team from the Ministry and engineer Sherwin Moore, with regards to the upgrade of the National Gymnasium basketball court.
The facility, when completed, apart from serving the surrounding community, will be the GABA’s ‘home base’ for the sport in the city.
GABA’s President Jermaine Slater, along with executives Rawle Toney and Darcel Harris, shared the Association’s ideas while listening to those of the Minister and the engineer.
The main basketball court will have an arena-like look, fitted with changing rooms for both males and females, as well as a concession area.
Following the passing of the Ministry’s $1.5B allocation for sport, funding was made available for the project’s completion.
“The GABA is happy to see the realisation of this project which we believe will help tremendously in our plans to help develop the sport of basketball in the city,” Slater said.
Slater said he was happy that the Minister was respectful in ensuring that the basketball fraternity is being consulted on the project, adding “we’re excited to see the finished product of the facility, and we know that our affiliated clubs and players are going to make good use and care of the facility.”
A completion date and timeline has not been set by the Ministry, but, with most of the ground work already completed, it was noted that it shouldn’t be long.
