PARAMARIBO, SURINAME – The Guyana Basketball Federation (GBF) confirms that both the national boys’ and girls’ basketball teams have concluded their participation in the 2026 Inter Guiana Games (IGG) in Suriname, with the boys’ team falling in a hard-fought 80-77 decision to the host nation at the Anthony Nesty Stadium on Saturday evening.

The boys’ squad delivered a spirited performance in their final fixture, demonstrating commendable offensive execution and competitive resolve against a determined Surinamese side. Despite the outcome, the GBF recognizes the effort and development displayed by the team throughout the tournament.

Guyana established early control of the contest, claiming the opening quarter 20-18 before extending their advantage to 47-38 at halftime. Tyreek Sampson led all scorers with a game-high 23 points, while Avion Kesney contributed 17 points, Josiah Cumberbatch added 15, and Stephan Duke chipped in with 14. The team’s first-half performance showcased the offensive capabilities and teamwork that the GBF continues to cultivate within its youth development programmes.

Suriname mounted a determined second-half resurgence, capitalizing on foul trouble to narrow the deficit. Despite holding a 66-61 lead entering the final period, Guyana encountered turnover challenges that allowed the hosts to seize a late advantage. Trailing 80-77 with 2.3 seconds remaining, Guyana had an opportunity to force overtime, but a final turnover ended their hopes of extension.

The girls’ team also concluded their campaign with a 45-29 defeat to French Guiana in their final matchup, marking their second consecutive loss of the tournament.

The Guyana Basketball Federation acknowledges the challenges faced by both squads during this year’s IGG competition and commends the athletes for their dedication, sportsmanship, and representation of Guyana on the regional stage. The GBF remains committed to the continued development of basketball at the youth level and will conduct a thorough review of the teams’ performances to inform future preparation and strategic planning.

The Federation extends its gratitude to the coaching staff, support personnel, and the athletes for their commitment throughout the tournament, and thanks the Government of Guyana and the Guyana Olympic Association for their continued support of basketball development.
