The National Sports Commission (NSC) in collaboration with the Guyana Basketball Federation (GBF) commenced a two-day coaching programme for teachers at the National Racquet Centre, Woolford Avenue, Georgetown, on Wednesday.
Coordinated by National Coach Julian Haynes, teachers will gain knowledge about the coaching philosophy, rules, basic court markings, footwork and body movement, and other technical areas of athlete development.
The second day of the training will move into practical sessions at Burnham Basketball Court, Georgetown.
Assistant Director of Sport, Melissa Dow-Richardson, applauded the initiative and stated that this is in keeping with the mission to develop talent in the 12 core sports in Guyana.
Those core sports are Badminton, Basketball, Cricket, Football, Hockey, Rugby, Squash, Swimming, Tennis, Table Tennis, Track and Field, and Volleyball.
The expectation of Dow-Richardson is to see more basketball school teams emerge in Guyana so they can fuel the club system and then feed into the national teams.
GBF Vice-President, Rawle Toney commended Haynes for the initiative and expressed his gratitude to the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport for the support.
