GLASGOW, Scotland – July 24, 2026 – Guyana’s men’s 3×3 basketball team opened their Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games campaign with a battling 21-14 defeat to tournament hosts Scotland in Friday’s Pool A clash at SEC Hall 4.
The Guyanese side, competing in their second consecutive Commonwealth Games following their debut in Birmingham 2022, showed flashes of promise but ultimately fell short against a clinical Scottish outfit powered by the tournament’s home crowd.
Christian Hinckson led the scoring for Guyana with 6 points, converting a perfect 4/4 from inside the arc and adding one 2-point basket. CaptainTravis Belgrave andKevin Mickle each contributed 3 points, whileAnish Ramlall rounded out the scoring with 2 points. Mickle also pulled down a team-high 6 rebounds and recorded the only Guyanese dunk of the contest.
However, the story of the match was Guyana’s struggles from beyond the arc. The South American side converted just 2 of their 19 attempts from 2-point range – a chilly 11% – while Scotland drained 4 of 13 from distance (31%). The hosts also held the edge at the free-throw line, shooting 80% (8/10) compared to Guyana’s 50% (1/2).
Scotland’sSkyler White proved the difference-maker, pouring in a game-high 8 points on 3/7 shooting from deep and dominating the glass with 10 rebounds.Owen McCormack added 6 points and 2 rebounds for the hosts, whileKyle Jimenez contributed 5 points and 4 key assists.
Despite the loss, there were encouraging signs for the Guyanese contingent. The team shot an efficient 82% (9/11) from 1-point range and held their own on the boards with 17 total rebounds – just one shy of Scotland’s 18. The defensive effort also forced 5 Scottish turnovers.
The Guyanese squad will look to regroup quickly as pool play continues. With 12 teams divided into two pools of six, every match carries significant weight in the race for knockout stage qualification.
Head coach and the technical staff will undoubtedly address the perimeter shooting as the team prepares for their next challenge in the group stage.
The 3×3 basketball tournaments run through July 29 at the Scottish Event Campus, with Guyana aiming to bounce back and make their mark on the international stage.
