Guyana Youth Basketball on the rise despite no support for the Guyana Government and FIBA

In the last 16 months, Guyana basketball has hosted the Caribbean Basketball Confederation Under 16 Championships for men and women. Our men finished as the second-best Under 16 team in the Caribbean, earning themselves a place in the Centro-basketball Under 17 championships 2017. Recent successes in basketball also included; the National Under 15 men’s team competing in Centro-basketball 2016, the national senior men, with a majority of players under age 23, competing in a tri-nation tournament in Jamaica, and just recently the national under 17 men despite tough circumstances, competing at the Centro basketball championship held in the Dominican Republic.

Introducing 16-year-old basketball prodigy, Kevon Wiggins

AT 6` 1”, Kevon Wiggins has to be the best pound-for-pound youth basketball player for Guyana in the past year. Wiggins rose to prominence last year in the Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) U-16 Championships which was played in Guyana. In that tournament, Wiggins averaged 15.2 points, 11.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game. His exploits took Team Guyana into the finals where they lost to Bahamas 57-84,

Mecca 2017 set to be largest yet; GABF head plans to improve marketing

Guyana’s National Club Basketball Championship, Mecca, has been set for November-December this year, and is expected to have the final tip off on Boxing Day, according to President of the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF), Nigel Hinds. In addition, he promised that 16 clubs will be battling for the biggest incentives that the competition has ever seen. The $1.2 million top prize of 2014, which was the largest to date, will definitely be surpassed.

Local referees to benefit from FIBA licensing programme by year-end

On Wednesday, Kaieteur Sport reported that lack of officials had been one of the pitfalls of the 2017 season of the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association’s (GABA)/Banks DIH leagues thus far, as stated by coach of Pacesetters, Clement Brusch. Brusch indicated that many former players have expressed interest in being trained in officiating and had challenged the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) to facilitate this.

Harold ‘Mr 111’ Adams happy after erasing Auric Tappin’s 33-year-old record

Tappin’s 58 points was the most scored by a Guyanese player in a senior competition, but that was until September 11, 2017, when Harold Adams scored a jaw-dropping 111 points in the Victory Valley Royals’ 206-46 points win over Bankers Trust Falcons.
