Following Guyana’s successful hosting of the Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) Under 16 Championship last year, which impressed the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), the international interest in Guyana’s basketball will continue when the Executive Director Assistant at FIBA, Victor Mansure visits today.
According to information reaching Kaieteur Sport, Mansure will be on a fact-finding mission to ascertain the shortcomings and successes of the sport here so that FIBA can be properly updated on what is needed to develop basketball in Guyana.
The visit will begin with a press conference in the morning from 9:00am before a potential meeting with Director of Sport, Christopher Jones later in the day. Mansure will also be meeting with the basketball officials from Linden, Georgetown and Berbice.
Guyana’s hosting of the CBC U-16 Championships impressed FIBA to the point that a letter of commendation was sent to the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF). Guyana will be playing in the CentroBasket Championships this year as a result of its runner-up finish last year.
In addition, Guyana also lost in the finals of the FIBA 3×3 Basketball Challenge in St. Lucia. It is clear that Guyana is benefitting from its international performances that have obviously gained the attention of its international parent body.
